Books

There's a lot of information online about diet, far more than you could ever consume in a lifetime, but how do you know what's legitimate advice and what's just nonsense?

It is hard, but one way is to consider purchasing a book. Sadly anybody can make a YouTube and either rehash other people's content, or just make up garbage and give bad health advice. Now they could also write a book, but it's far less likely to happen.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin Resistance What is Insulin Resistance? And why should we care?

Often abbreviated to IR, Insulin Resistance is a state in the body where our insulin - a major hormone within the body - is not working as efficiently as it should do. This is bad for a number of reasons, which we will be covering in this course.

Most of us know what insulin is and that it is important, particularly in the case of Diabetes, but many don't understand what it really does and how it's activity, and resistance, can be affected and modulated within the body.

Many patients I see are suffering from marked levels of Insulin Resistance, usually for many years, usually without even knowing it.

The symptoms can be subtle, or obvious. Usually it's all those things we put down to 'getting older', including:

Weight Gain Changes in urination Feeling faint or dizzy or feeling 'the need for sugar' Recurrent infections More severe infections if you get one Funny aches and pains Changes in sensation in the hands or feet, such as tingling or numbness Feeling hungry a lot of the time, even after eating Poor skin and increased eczema Multiple skin tags around the neck and armpits

Insulin resistance is important because it is a major cause of heart disease, high blood pressure, of course Type 2 Diabetes and weight gain and obesity, as well as a myriad of other symptoms that you may even be experiencing right now.

Introduction to Low Carb / Keto / Carnivore

A low carbohydrate diet is way of eating that reduces and restricts the intake of carbohydrates whilst increasing the consumption of protein and fats. The exact definition of a low carbohydrate diet may vary, but typically it involves reducing carbohydrate intake to less than 20-150 grams per day, depending on the individual's goals and preferences.

Carbohydrates are a type of macronutrient found in foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables, and sweets. They are the body's primary source of energy and are broken down into glucose, which the body uses for fuel.

In a low carbohydrate diet, foods that are high in carbohydrates are minimized, if not entirely restricted, such as bread, pasta, rice, and sugary foods. Instead, the diet is focused on consuming protein sources such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, along with healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil.

The goal of a low carbohydrate diet is to reduce the body's reliance on carbohydrates and reduce the problems that can be associated with using carbohydrates as fuel, and also to shift the body into a state of ketosis, in which the body begins to use stored fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.

Low carbohydrate diets can lead to weight loss and improved blood sugar control, reduced insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, improvement in cognitive function, reproductive health, general physical health and improved mental health.

However it may not be appropriate for everyone, particularly those with certain medical conditions. It's important to speak with a healthcare professional before starting any new diet.
